Found on the web: Innovative Design, Techniques and Equipment

ABSTRACT The Port of Rotterdam is currently undergoing a massive extension called Maasvlakte 2. During the first phase 700 hectares of new port area will be created. A design was developed to ensure that wherever possible the sea defence would be soft, since a hard seawall is more expensive. One of the innovative design features of...

It’s all about the balance on floating terminals

E-Crane explains the basic balance design principles employed on floating cranes and cites successes that prove the effectiveness of floating terminal technology. The balance crane principle is simple. The “E” in E-Crane stands for equilibrium, a key feature of the parallelogram style boom which provides a direct mechanical link between the stick and the rear counterweight. There are no steel winches or cables in the design. The counterweight continuously balances the total weight of the steel structure along with half...

Getting the balance right

Bas Tolhuizen, E‑Crane, Belgium, explains how equilibrium-balanced cranes offer particular benefits for the bulk materials handling industry. E-Crane developed the first equilibrium‑balanced cranes 25 years ago. The design is based on an innovative parallelogram‑style boom that provides a direct mechanical connection between the counterweight and the load. This four‑bar mechanism system ensures that the crane remains in balance throughout its working range. Compared to conventional cranes, which require as much as 80% of their available energy just to move...

E-Crane’ s barge haul system

Every year, 650m tonnes of bulk material are moved on the US inland waterways alone. The logistics chain of bulk materials like coal begins with a barge.  Transportation by barge is one of the most cost-effective ways to move coal from the point of production to market. With today’s energy costs steadily rising, this method of transportation is increasing in popularity. Today up to 20% of all coal movement is made by barges. Why? Because it is the least expensive way to transport coal over longer distances. With Indonesia, Australia...
